Out of the Box

I'm sure everyone has this dream of travelling all over the world. So do I. HOWEVER, there's a lot of hindrances that stop us from pursuing this dream. I have been thinking about this matter. MONEY is my main concern. T.T Why wasn't I born in a super wealthy family?

HOLD IT RIGHT THERE PEOPLE!
The "saviour" is here!!!

Out of the Box is a collaboration between three people who believe that individuals, families and groups of people are looking for ways to get more out of life. The collaboration brings together Julian Hyde, Siew Yeen Lee and Paul Jambunathan, about who more can be found on their about us page. Having known each other for a number of years, they believe that they have something to offer people who are looking to break the mould.

The name Out of the Box reflects this, pointing to ways for people to develop themselves, experience life and learn new skills - and our goal is to provide a range of opportunities to help people achieve this.

Currently, they provide three programmes, namely:

Work & Travel USA: providing university students in Malaysia with the opportunity to work in the USA for up to four months, and travel for an additional month. No more standing on the sidelines wathcing, but a unique opportunity to live life in the USA - up close and personal!

Trainee Programmes: making it possible for students and recent graduates to go to the USA to acquire professional work experience associated with their major field of study or professional endeavour for up to 18 months, and explore life in the United Sates with maximum freedom and at minimum cost.

Personal Development: for individuals who want to do more with their lives but lack the skills and confidence.

GOSH! What a mouth-watering offer! Can't wait till I graduate and sign up for the Work & Travel USA or Trainee Programmes. Dad has always been telling me, going overseas to learn about their cultures is very important in our lives. It will help us see and value stuff differently.

So Imma start saving $$$!!! AMERICA WAIT FOR ME!!!

Korean Fever!

It's undeniable that Japanese fever is slowly going away and the Korean fever is taking over the spot. SARANGHAE Hanguk!

So what is Korean Fever?!
It actually refers to the significantly increased popularity of South Korean culture around the world.

How did all this start?!
According to Michael D. Shin, professor of Modern Korean Literature and History at Cornell, Korean fever is overwhelmingly driven by Korean TV dramas.

NOW WE KNOW THE CULPRIT!

Here's a list of the well-known Korean Dramas:

Autumn in My Heart?

Winter Sonata?

Jewel in the Palace?

Full House?

Does that ring your bell? I'm sure at least one or two rang. These Korean dramas were hits in the 21st century. They were everyone's topic. Thanks to the wonderful world of entertainment!

I wasn't a fan of Korean till I watched Brilliant Legacy which was aired on 8TV during mid 2010.
You can check out the drama's synopsis here.

Now the fever is getting crazier!!! With boy and girl bands like Super Juniors, Girl's Generation, 2AM, Big Bang, DBSK etc., more and more people are infected by this epidemic.

Korea is getting more significant in this world. People look up to them, wanna be like them, dress like them, talk like them... or even LOOK like them! (Thank God I'm not that extreme.)

Anyway, before I end this post, I would like to spread my fever to people.

This is a soundtrack by Lee Seung Gi, one of the most influential Korean star at the moment, of the drama My Girlfriend is a Gumiho.

Hope you enjoyed it.

The lazy bug shalt be gone!

"When's the assignment due?" anonymous 1.

"18 days from today." anonymous 2.

"AWESOME! I still have like 15 days or so to get things started!" anonymous 1.

This happens on my a lot. I'm a real procrastinator. Even for this assignment, I delayed the work till it's almost due and I stayed up to complete it. I know it is a super bad attitude to have. My work will be so messed up and I think I should do something about it.

Well, there goes nothing~

What is Procrastination?

Procrastination is putting off or avoiding doing something that must be done. It is natural to procrastinate occasionally. However, excessive procrastination can result in guilt feelings about not doing a task when it should be done. It can also cause anxiety since the task still needs to be done. Further, excessive procrastination can cause poor performance if the task is completed without sufficient time to do it well. In short, excessive procrastination can interfere with school and personal success.

Why Do Students Procrastinate?

There are many reasons why students procrastinate. Here are the most common reasons:

  1. Perfectionism. A student's standard of performance may be so high for a task that it does not seem possible to meet that standard.
  2. Fear of Failure. A student may lack confidence and fear that he/she will be unable to accomplish a task successfully.
  3. Confusion. A student may be unsure about how to start a task or how it should be completed.
  4. Task Difficulty. A student may lack the skills and abilities needed to accomplish a task.
  5. Poor Motivation. A student may have little or no interest in completing a task because he/she finds the task boring or lacking in relevance.
  6. Difficulty Concentrating. A student may have too many things around that distract him/her from doing a task.
  7. Task Unpleasantness. A student may dislike doing what a task requires.
  8. Lack of Priorities. A student may have little or no sense about which tasks are most important to do.

How Do I Know if I Procrastinate Excessively?

You procrastinate excessively if you agree with five or more of the following statements:

  1. I often put off starting a task I find difficult.
  2. I often give up on a task as soon as I start to find it difficult.
  3. I often wonder why I should be doing a task.
  4. I often have difficulty getting started on a task.
  5. I often try to do so many tasks at once that I cannot do any of them.
  6. I often put off a task in which I have little or no interest.
  7. I often try to come up with reasons to do something other than a task I have to do.
  8. I often ignore a task when I am not certain about how to start it or complete it.
  9. I often start a task but stop before completing it.
  10. I often find myself thinking that if I ignore a task, it will go away.
  11. I often cannot decide which of a number of tasks I should complete first.
  12. I often find my mind wandering to things other that the task on which I am trying to work.

What Can I Do About Excessive Procrastination?

Here are some things you can do to control excessive procrastination.

  1. Motivate yourself to work on a task with thoughts such as "There is no time like the present," or "Nobody's perfect."
  2. Prioritize the tasks you have to do.
  3. Commit yourself to completing a task once started.
  4. Reward yourself whenever you complete a task.
  5. Work on tasks at the times you work best.
  6. Break large tasks into small manageable parts.
  7. Work on tasks as part of a study group.
  8. Get help from teachers and other students when you find a task difficult.
  9. Make a schedule of the tasks you have to do and stick to it.
  10. Eliminate distractions that interfere with working on tasks.
  11. Set reasonable standards that you can meet for a task.
  12. Take breaks when working on a task so that you do not wear down.
  13. Work on difficult and/or unpleasant tasks first.
  14. Work on a task you find easier after you complete a difficult task.
  15. Find a good place to work on tasks.

Above all, think positively and get going. Once you are into a task, you will probably find that it is more interesting than you thought it would be and not as difficult as you feared. You will feel increasingly relieved as you work toward its accomplishment and will come to look forward to the feeling of satisfaction you will experience when you have completed the task.

The Simple Plan Foundation was founded by my favourite Canadian band Simple Plan.

Why a foundation?

The foundation is there to help young people in need and has three specific goals:

1- finding ways to help teenagers deal with the often difficult passage to adulthood.

2- helping and supporting young people who are the victims of life threatening illnesses.

3- Encouraging and promoting the practice of music as a privileged tool to help young kids find a passion in life, keeping them away from street gangs and criminality, and preventing them from dropping out of school. The Foundation also supports musicotherapy programs to help sick young people.

(The people in this video are cancer survivors. You can read the story here.)

Man in the mirror

This song has been circling in my mind for some reason that I dunno since I woke up. So I decided to blog about it.

MICHAEL JACKSON
I shall say he's one of the most influential people in my life. Or, everyone's life.

Michael Jackson was the most influential artist of the 20th century. There is no doubt about it although, after all, he was only a pop star. Not many people have the opportunity to touch as many people as he did, or give as much of themselves as he did. He has brought the world together. Helped us see pass the racism. Taught us how we can help to change the world.

His influence was felt throughout the whole culture he helped to create. A magnificent dancer, a great entertainer, awesome singer, yet he helped many to become more than they were as he was helped by his mentors in later life. He was a true entrepreneur whether lead by Joe his dad or Quincy or who knows who.

All in all, he is a LEGEND. He will live on in this world till the end of time.
